An Introduction to Responsible Investment: Policy, Structure and Process

This introductory guide provides a quick summary on how an investor can develop and implement a responsible investment (RI) policy. It covers how to embed RI into an organisation’s structure and processes – starting with the purpose of the investment policy and proceeding through a simple and practical seven-step programme, from setting targets to final review. It also discusses the pros and cons of training specialist teams to handle environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters versus integrating this expertise into the investment team; and provides several examples of tools and techniques for the monitoring and reporting of ESG issues to clients.
